The "Village by the Sea", as locals call it, is 35 miles north of downtown San Diego and 87 miles south of Los Angeles.
The name Carlsbad was taken from a Bohemian town of Karlsbad in the Czech Republic know for it famous Spa. A well dug in the area was discovered to be the same chemically as the famous Spa in Karlsbad. This was capitalized on and the town flourished. The original well of this discovered water can still be found at Alt Karlsbad, a replica of a German Hanseatic house, located on Carlsbad Boulevard. A Spa still operates today with this therapeutic water.
Carlsbad is also home to Legoland California. This is the first Legoland theme park outside of Europe.
